Established in February 2007 by Director Lucinda Tyler and Music Teacher Lois Airgood, Pocahontas Music’s Mission Statement was "to re-introduce music education to Hillsboro Elementary School where music has not been part of the curriculum for many years." In December 2008 a music teacher was hired by the Board of Education and the school continues to have a music teacher for the 2009-2010 school year.
Having attained that goal in less than two years, volunteer Airgood developed Pocahontas Music last fall into an afterschool program. All Hillsboro Elementary students, kindergarten through 5th grade, are welcome to participate in guitar class on Wednesday afternoons and keyboard class on Thursdays. Student reaction to the program is a mixture of "…makes me feel wonderful" to "I’ve wanted to take music since I was three years old and now I am!" to "I’m looking forward to next year" and to just plain "I love it!"
Pocahontas Music has propelled itself through government grants, support from our local councils and private donations. Should anyone be interested in donating to help keep Pocahontas Music alive please send any amount (no amount too small) to Pocahontas Music, Hillsboro Elementary School, Hillsboro, WV 24946.
